Endangered Birds – New Fabric Designs

I’ve recently outsourced some of my day to day job so I am finding I am starting to have more time to design and I’m loving it. My latest designs are inspired by endangered birds and trying to highlight their plight in a new medium, fabric.

This design was a limited palette of only four colours, it was for a Spoonflower competition in partnership with the magazine Mollie Makes. It features the beautiful, flightless Kakapo which is the largest parrot in the world and is seriously endangered with only 126 left in the world.

I can’t lie, this design was challenging working with only four colours but it was a good challenge as it made me explore how different shapes could form different perspectives.

This design is Matisse inspired for another competition with Spoonflower who partnered with The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. The idea was to design a fabric which would look at home in a Matisse painting. Again, this was a restricted palette of 4 colours and white. The colours worked better and I had a lot of fun hand drawing this design on the tablet.

The above design was my original design which was inspired by Matisse’s cut out work. The saying (credit to my husband) is to highlight the plight of the Black Robin whose population in the world in 1980 was only 5, it currently stands at 126, so slowly but surely things are improving. Knowledge is everything.

Finally, a mention of some new products that Spoonflower have added to compliment the bespoke fabric designs are wall paper, wall decals and for a limited time, gift wrap. I was most excited to think that I could have some of my own designs as gift wrap. I went a little crazy and bought a few rolls! Now I am wondering if I can bear to part with it to actually wrap gifts up!

To see my latest designs as fabric, wall paper, wall decal or gift wrap please check out my shop (note the above endangered birds designs are not for sale yet so will show under the Designs not for sale – still need to proof them).
